Franz Liszt was born 200 years ago today on Oct 22, 1811. The original
pop star, women were known to swoon at his concerts -- the
phenomenon even given the name Lisztomania. He was an
extraordinary composer, extraordinarily generous to many greats (like
Beethoven) whose works he popularized by transcribing them for piano
and performing them. A formidable pianist, his compositions are
notoriously difficult to play -- in his time only he could!

Composed by Norbert Schulze in 1938 to the lyrics from a poem by Hans
Leip written during the First World War, Lili Marleen rendered in Lale
Andersen's husky voice from German Armed Forces Radio in Belgrade
soon became a huge hit among WWII soldiers from both sides in North
Africa -- the German Afrika Korps and the British 8th Army. It's popularity
was universal (partial list of translations below). Schulze died on Oct 14,
2003.
